It should be the best possible weather for writing, but I spent so much time on the phone cancelling appointments and urging family members to stay off the road – and the rest of my time waiting for calls to assure me they were safe.

But at least Bet and I got out for our walks today – even if we did look as if we were setting out for the South Pole…
