Characterization

What? You thought I was about to launch into a lecture?
Nah. The ten second variety, maybe.

Okay, so this is all about… er, characterization.

Look at Bet’s face – doesn’t that tell you everything you’d ever need to know about a rainy day?

We have some really special neighbours – Hi, David and Anita! – who love to take Bet out for walks on sunny days. (How spoiled can one dog be?) Guess you won’t be going out for your extra walks today, Bets.

It might be a cliche but settings set the mood for books.
Let your scene wear the setting like a costume, Bob McKee recommends -

Hear! Hear! Say I.

Wishing you only sunshine in your life today
Or a sexy sheikh ;-)

PS You don’t have to comment – and after around a year of closed comments, who could blame you?! But on the advice of my fab friend and amazing author, Sharon Kendrick, whose blog spot you can find at http://sharonkendrick.blogspot.com/
And Sharon’s gorgeous new website: www.sharonkendrick.com
I am opening up to comments in the hope that the Spammers have given up too!!

  1. Yes – it works!
Totally agree about settings, Sue – a book which opens in a small English village will have a completely different feel to one which starts on a busy New York street.
Weather, too – wonderfully reflects the moods of the hero and heroine.
